South Loop man charged with three attacks on CTA Green Line

A South Loop man remains in prison on attempted murder and assault charges in connection with multiple attacks on CTA passengers.

Ivan Weldon, 42, is accused of slashing a 48-year-old man’s throat with a box cutter and stabbing him multiple times on May 31 on a Green Line train near the Garfield Station, 320 E. Garfield Boulevard. The victim was treated at a hospital, where he received about 30 stitches to his face, according to court documents. He also suffered a ligament injury to his thumb.

Weldon is charged with three serious crimes in connection with this attack: attempted murder, aggravated assault in a public place, and aggravated assault causing serious injury.

That same day, Weldon allegedly attacked two other passengers at the CTA Green Line Bronzeville station, 16 E. 35th St.

In one incident, Weldon allegedly grabbed a man by his backpack and threw him onto the CTA platform before the victim could board the train. Weldon then kicked the man in the face, court documents state.

Weldon punched another man in the face at the Bronzeville station as he tried to board a train, prosecutors allege.

Two charges were brought in connection with each of these attacks: grievous bodily harm in a public place and grievous bodily harm.

During a detention hearing last week, a judge ordered Weldon remanded in custody.

His next court date is June 20.
