Hurricane Preparedness Week – Get Moving When a Storm Threatens

HOUSTON (CW39) – Today, Hurricane Preparedness Week, we’re discussing how to travel when a storm threatens.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME?

Close windows, secure loose exterior items, and secure all exterior doors. Move your vehicle to a safe location if you are not using it to evacuate. If you are evacuating, unplug electrical equipment such as radios, televisions and small appliances (freezers and refrigerators should also be unplugged if there is a risk of flooding). If you are asked to do so, turn off the water, gas and electricity before leaving.

SHELTER OPTIONS AND PETS

Check with local authorities for available accommodation. If you have pets, find a place where they can stay: most public shelters only allow service animals. In general, have several lodging options, including remote options such as a friend’s house outside the impact zone or a motel.

PREPARE YOUR GO-BAGS

Pack a travel bag to take things with you if you have to leave in a hurry. In addition to basic survival needs, don’t forget other supplies such as chargers and hygiene products. Plan to have enough for at least three days and don’t forget your pets. When preparing for these basic needs, remember to keep your phone charged and be sure to fill/recharge your vehicle as well.
Your go-bag should also contain important personal and real estate documents, including your written communications plan.

CHECK OTHERS

Many people rely on their neighbors before and after a disaster, and there are many ways to help. Help them prepare for a storm and help them evacuate if necessary. Share the latest forecast information with your community so they know what to expect.

HOW TO EVACUATE

Always follow evacuation orders from local authorities: do not wait for a hurricane to intensify before deciding to follow this order. You want to leave early enough to avoid getting stuck in bad weather. If time permits, unplug electrical equipment, leave a note stating your location, and check to see if any neighbors need a ride.
