Greek public broadcaster ERT reported that the body was that of 67-year-old Mosley.

Authorities announced on Friday that they would intensify the search after the Briton was last seen alive on Wednesday.

His wife Clare Bailey alerted the police when he did not return from a coastal walk on the island where they were on holiday.

Mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas said Symi was experiencing “unbearable heat” and the area where Mosley was last seen was “difficult because it is very rocky”.

Record temperatures were recorded across much of Greece in the first week of June, with temperatures reaching 39.3 degrees Celsius (103 degrees Fahrenheit) on Symi, near Rhodes.
