Driver dies after SUV crashes from Boston intersection into roadway below – Boston 25 News

BOSTON – The driver of a car that drove off a ramp in Boston Wednesday morning was pronounced dead, the Boston Fire Department said.

Paul Burke, Boston’s fire marshal, said it was fortunate that no cars were on the road when the SUV, which was already completely destroyed, fell about 40 feet (12 meters) to the ground.

This was actually nothing short of a miracle. The ramp is heavily used by many drivers who are driving onto the expressway.

The vehicle broke through the barrier on the ramp from Interstate 93 North to Route 90 West near the Frontage Road Area.

After the flames were finally extinguished, “nothing was left” of the vehicle, Burke said.

“It’s a tragic scene,” Burke added.

A video sent to Boston 25 News showed the twisted remains of the concrete barrier through which the car crashed.

Boston subway traffic cameras captured smoke rising from the wreckage above the busy street.

Several ramps in the area are closed while Massachusetts State Police investigate. MassDOT warned drivers just before noon to expect further delays.

The Boston Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the accident.
