4 dead in wrong-way driver head-on collision in Texas – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A teacher is the sole survivor of a devastating wrong-way driving crash that killed four people, including two nine-year-old girls, in Parker County on Sunday, according to the Texas DPS.

Crash investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the driver of a Ford F-150 was traveling north on Farm-to-Market Road 51 around 2:18 p.m. when the driver of a Subaru Legacy crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the truck south of Friendship Road.

The crash killed the driver of the Legacy, identified by the Texas Department of Transportation as 29-year-old Kathryn Lain of Boyd. Three passengers in the truck were also killed, identified by the Department of Transportation only as 66-year-old Gregory Daniel Schilb and two 9-year-old girls.

According to DPS, the driver of the pickup, 43-year-old Amber Rae Reed of Springtown, was hospitalized with serious injuries after the crash.

Springtown ISD Superintendent Shane Strickland issued a statement Monday saying that the two children killed in the accident were fourth-graders at Goshen Creek Elementary School and that Reed also works as a teacher at that school.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news of a tragic accident that occurred yesterday on Highway 51. Of the four fatalities, we lost two precious fourth-graders,” Strickland said in a statement. “In addition, one of our beloved teachers at Goshen Creek Elementary was seriously injured.”

Strickland said Reed was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition but faces a long recovery.

“Our hearts ache for the families of those we have lost, for our entire district, and for our community as a whole. It breaks our hearts to hear of the people who lost their lives during this tragedy. Life is so precious and far too short. During this difficult time, we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” Strickland wrote.

The school district said grief counselors will be available at the Goshen Creek Elementary School library starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

“We understand that this news is incredibly devastating and we want to assure you that we will update our community as quickly as possible,” Strickland wrote. “We encourage everyone to utilize these resources as they provide a safe and supportive environment for all. Please continue to pray for everyone.”

The crash occurred in central Parker County, on a two-lane road about halfway between Springtown and Weatherford, about 26 miles northwest of Fort Worth. DPS said it is not yet known what caused Lain to veer into the northbound lanes. The investigation into the crash is ongoing and DPS has not released any further details.
