Domestic unrest prompts a brief security alert during NKU’s graduation ceremony

A domestic altercation involving a knife at Northern Kentucky University sparked a safety alert Tuesday night. The warning was issued around 7 p.m. and said a “dangerous situation” had been reported at Truist Arena. People were urged to seek shelter and avoid the area. A short time later, university officials said the situation was under control and there was no threat. In a statement Tuesday evening, the university said police received a call around 7 p.m. reporting a man with a knife on Nunn Drive on the NKU campus. Upon arrival, police found three people who were on their way to Colerain High School’s graduation ceremony at Truist Arena and were involved in a domestic dispute. A man involved in the argument was taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The university said he injured his hand while trying to grab a knife. The university said the altercation was an isolated incident and that no one on campus or at Truist Arena was ever in danger. None of the people involved in the dispute were part of Colerain’s graduating class. The Northwest Local School District released a statement about the incident, which read in part: “NWLSD administration was not informed of the incident until after the graduation ceremony was completed. Fortunately, today’s ceremony was not affected in any way by the incident on the NKU campus. We are extremely proud of the 466 students who graduated today, many with honors and scholarships. We hope that what happened does not overshadow the tremendous achievements of our students.”
