Houston Area School District Closures Tuesday, May 21

HOUSTON — Some school districts have decided to cancel classes for Tuesday, May 21 as the Houston area continues to recover from Thursday’s storm.

Several schools were damaged by the storm and lost power. Although power was restored to some campuses over the weekend, students returned Monday to find the air conditioning was not working, leading to early dismissals, particularly for Houston ISD campuses.

“About a third of our schools and a number of our central facilities remain without power. As many of you may be seeing in your own homes, the electricity is not always stable. In some cases, the Power comes in and then goes out. Our phone service provider also continues to be unstable, preventing incoming and outgoing calls. Many of our employees and families remain without power. Therefore, all SBISD schools will remain closed on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.”
