Buffalo police provide update on teens shot Saturday night

The 14-year-old victim who died shortly after the shooting has been identified as Jazzmine Fomby.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 14-year-old girl who was shot and killed after Saturday’s shooting at Alexander Place has been identified as charter school student Jazzmine Fomby.

“A 14-year-old girl who hasn’t even been given half a chance at life,” said Pastor James Giles, president and CEO of Back to Basics Outreach Ministries. “There is no way that at 14 she could have done anything worth killing like she was – nothing she could have done to anyone.”

Fomby was one of six teenagers shot dead outside an apartment building following a party that evening. Four men were taken to ECMC. Three were treated and released while a 15-year-old man remains in critical but stable condition at ECMC. Hospital officials told police he “is on the mend.”

A sixth teenager was shot and refused treatment, according to police.

Buffalo police said they responded to a call around 10:21 p.m. Saturday regarding loud music and groups smoking outside. This call was quickly transformed into a fight call. Police remained on scene for 25 to 30 minutes, dispersing several groups of fighting children following a large party at a private residence involving hundreds of people.

At 11:10 p.m., Buffalo Police responded to an additional call from the same location regarding shots fired. That’s where they found the six teenagers shot to death. Police believe the shooting was related to the fight earlier in the night.

So far, no suspects have been announced and the shooter remains at large. Police said they believe three handguns were carried at that party, but they provided no further details.

Detectives who canvassed the area found shell casings on Alexander Place, so that’s where they believe the shooter(s) were. They would not say how many shots were fired.

Police continue to search for those involved in the shooting. They say they received additional information and advice from the community Sunday evening.

“I want to make it clear to the shooter or shooters involved in this case: consider turning yourself in,” said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. “If you have any conscience or remorse for killing a 14-year-old girl, you should contact the Buffalo Police Department and turn yourself in. It is a senseless crime to open fire on a group of children, it makes absolutely no sense. .”

Giles and his Back to Basics outreach program support the community by having a presence at nearby high schools. He said their goal was to get to the root of the problem that causes such violence.

“We are talking about young people who have no understanding of the value of life,” he said. “For them, everything is just a game.”

Police have also set up additional patrols.
