Myon Burrell was arrested for the second time since his release from prison

Burrell is also charged with possession of a firearm in a separate case.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Myon Burrell, the Minnesota man released from a life sentence in 2020 after a high-profile case, has been arrested for the second time since his release, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

Sources at HCSO confirm that Burrell was taken into custody β€œon drug charges,” but no formal charges had been filed as of Friday.

Burrell faces an unrelated upcoming trial on separate charges of possession of a firearm by a felon and drug charges following an August 2023 arrest in Robbinsdale.

Burrell served 18 years in prison after being convicted twice in the 2002 murder of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards in south Minneapolis. Edwards was killed by a stray bullet that passed through her home while she was sitting at the table doing her homework.

Prosecutors believe Burrell, then 16, tried to shoot a rival gang member. Burrell always maintained his innocence and provided various alibis over the years. He was convicted in two separate trials – one before a jury and one before a judge – and the second conviction was upheld by appeal courts.

But a movement to free Burrell began in 2020 when an Associated Press article raised questions about the police investigation and subsequent prosecutions.

Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison, influenced by a report written by a group of six lawyers from across the country, decided to commute Burrell’s life sentence and release him from prison immediately on the grounds that he was only 16 at the alleged time old has committed his crime.

In an interview with KARE 11 last year, Burrell said he hoped the Attorney General’s Office’s new conviction review division would help overturn his conviction and clean up his record.
