U-Haul driver stopped in Westfield after police pursuit

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A man was arrested after a chase from Easthampton to Westfield that required police to use spike strips.

According to Easthampton Police Deputy Chief Dennis Scribner, officers received a call around 10:30 a.m. Friday about a U-Haul van driving erratically. The van was spotted on Union Street where a traffic police officer attempted to stop the van to check on the driver, but the van drove past the officer. Officers were also unable to stop the driver on Payson Avenue.

During all encounters with the police, the van was observed driving erratically. As the driver drove along Route 10, Southampton police used spike strips to deflate the van’s tires, but the vehicle was still able to continue into Westfield.

The U-Haul was eventually surrounded by patrol cars in the parking lot of Cumberland Farms in Westfield. The driver, a 50-year-old man, was arrested and taken to hospital for evaluation. Nobody was injured.

22News obtained photos of the U-Haul in Westfield with all tires except the rims. Several police patrol cars were in the area.
