The injured sailor is still in the hospital in a Navy training accident

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A sailor continues to recover at a local hospital, more than a week after a training accident in Florida injured more than 30 sailors and Marines.

The accident occurred May 1 between two Landing Craft Air Cushion Hovercraft off the coast of Jacksonville and involved personnel from the Norfolk-based USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group.

Five sailors were hospitalized, the other military personnel suffered only minor injuries and were treated aboard their ships.

Four of the hospitalized sailors have since been released, but the fifth sailor is being treated at Navy Medical Center Portsmouth. On Thursday afternoon, a Navy spokesperson told 13News Now that the sailor was “in stable condition” in the hospital.

The Navy said the investigation into the accident was ongoing.
