Two London women injured in bizarre accident at birthday party

Two women in their 20s who were seriously injured when a 60-foot oak tree fell on them at a party during Storm Evert are from London, the presenter announced.

This comes after further storms were forecast for the UK this weekend.

The injured couple were given first aid on the scene by doctors and nurses who were present at the party in Ubbeston, near Halesworth in Suffolk, the party organizer said.

According to Suffolk Police, one of the women suffered spinal and head injuries in the bizarre accident, while the other woman suffered pelvic and arm injuries.

The party organiser, who wished to remain anonymous, told MailOnline: ‘The music had only just started playing when we heard a loud bang. The tree fell over in the woods and luckily landed on the stage and bar area, which broke its fall, but it still landed on the other side of the clearing. That’s why it hit the two girls.

“It was in the woods, about five to ten meters from the bar. It was completely uprooted. Neither of them was trapped, although the fire brigade obviously came as a precaution. Five other people were lucky because they were not injured at all.

“We provided basic care to both patients. I don’t want to go into detail about their condition and the treatment they received. I have hosted a birthday party here every year for the past six years. Back then there were only about 30 people here. This is a real tragedy. Something like this just shouldn’t have happened.”

A Suffolk Police spokesman said: “Police received a report at around 6.35pm on Friday that an oak tree had fallen in Ubbeston, injuring two women.

“Firefighters, ambulances and rescue helicopters were also called to the scene. It is believed that the couple were at a private outdoor party with others.

“The two victims, aged around 20, suffered serious injuries in the incident.

“One injured person suffered spinal and head injuries, while the second injured person suffered pelvic and arm injuries. Both injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment.”
