The Los Angeles Police Department welcomed a new class of officers on Friday, July 26, as 23 LAPD recruits graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy.

With the addition of 19 men and four women to the LAPD force, the number of sworn officers in the country’s third-largest police department rises to just over 8,830. Among the new officers are 17 Latinos, three whites, two blacks and one Asian.

The officers completed 904 hours of training within 24 weeks.

For years, the department had about 10,000 sworn officers, but that number has dropped. And like other police departments across the country, the LAPD has recently had trouble recruiting and retaining officers.

According to an LAPD spokesperson, there were 8,808 sworn officers on the LAPD payroll as of Tuesday, July 23. LA Mayor Karen Bass set a goal last year to increase the number of sworn officers to 9,500.

Months later, the City Council approved a contract with rank-and-file police officers that included a steep increase in starting pay, annual raises and additional bonuses to attract new officers and prevent them from leaving the department. The contract is expected to cost the city nearly $1 billion over four years.

The council then approved another contract with senior LAPD officials.

In addition to the farewell of the 23 new LAPD officers, an LA Park Ranger and two officers from the Inglewood Police Department were also graduated at the ceremony on Friday.
