5-year-old girl and woman dead after accident in Campbell County

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Two people died after an accident on Monday, July 22, at 8:27 a.m.

According to Virginia State Police, the driver of a Kia Forte was traveling southbound in the 1900 block of Brookneal Highway when she skidded in heavy rain and entered the northbound lane, where she collided head-on with a semi-truck.

The driver of the Kia, Madilyn Ballard, 26, of Altavista, died at the scene, according to police. Police say she was wearing a seatbelt.

According to police, a five-year-old girl in the Kia also died at the scene of the accident. Police said she was wearing a seat belt and was sitting in a child seat.

The driver of the semi-trailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, police said.
