Florida man had murder on his mind. So he hopped on a tractor and attacked a college dorm, cops say.

Two additional counts of attempted murder add to additional charges against a golf course greenkeeper who used a tractor to attack a college dormitory and several cars, including a patrol car, on Saturday.

Ethan Layne, 22, now faces aggravated assault, burglary, aggravated vehicle theft, criminal mischief, attempted murder of a police officer and two additional counts of attempted murder. Layne is being held without bail at the Monroe County Detention Center.

Key West police spokesman Alyson Crean said in an email that their investigation is: “Layne went to college with the specific intent of killing two individuals.”

On Saturday around 6 p.m., Layne drove a tractor a mile from the Key West Golf Club to the Lagoon Landings dormitory at the College of the Florida Keys.

According to a Keys Weekly Newspapers Facebook post, Crean noted that Layne “drove the tractor through the lobby of the Lagoon Landings residence hall and then used the tractor’s bucket attachment to destroy the overhead plumbing beneath the building.”

The Facebook post also showed the truck Layne was using with the tractor overturning in the parking lot. According to police, he smashed the front of the tractor into a car with a four-year-old girl and her father.

He did the same thing to the first police cruiser, Crean added. The police officer behind the wheel shot at Layne, who escaped being hit but did not escape custody.

Under the standard, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates a police officer who fires a weapon.
