Health warning issued for corned beef and chicken products in 9 states

WASHINGTON (WKBN) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public warning about illegally imported meat and poultry products.

The following ready-to-eat meat and poultry products are affected: Corned beef from the Argentinian brand (150 g, 175 g and 260 g cans), Purefoods Corned Beef (150 g and 210 g cans), Minced Corned Beef (150 g and 190 g cans) and Lady’s Choice Chicken Spread (7.43 ounce glass).

The corned beef and chicken products were shipped to restaurants and retailers in several states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia, according to FSIS.

According to the report, the products were shipped from the Philippines.

The USDA said no one has reported any side effects from the products and that anyone with concerns should contact a doctor.

The USDA said the issue came to light during routine FSIS surveillance activities at a retailer that found meat and poultry products from the Philippines were unsuitable for export to the U.S. and that no information was available about the manufacturing facility.

FSIS urges retailers not to sell the products and urges consumers not to eat or serve them.

“Consumers are asked to double-bag the product when disposing of it to reduce the possibility of animals gaining access to the product, as USDA cannot confirm whether the products have been properly heated to control pathogens that are dangerous to livestock and poultry,” FSIS said.
