Details released: Mechanicsville man arrested for assaulting woman; attempted murder charge

GREAT MILLS, Maryland – John William Alvarado, a resident of Mechanicsville, was arrested on several charges, including attempted first and second degree murder, assault, and several firearms violations. The arrest followed a domestic incident that occurred on June 22, 2024, at a residence in Great Mills.

According to court documents, patrol officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a woman with non-life-threatening head injuries allegedly inflicted by her ex-husband, John Alvarado. The victim identified Alvarado as the attacker and reported he struck her with a handgun and fired two shots.

During the investigation, officers found empty shell casings and a bloodstained rag on the front steps at the scene. The victim was transported to Capitol Regional Medical Center for treatment.

A security camera at the residence recorded the incident. The footage allegedly showed Alvarado arriving in a black vehicle and committing the robbery. The footage and evidence collected at the scene were critical in identifying and locating Alvarado.

Alvarado, who has been convicted of serious crimes in the past, was banned from possessing firearms. He is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and several firearms offenses.

Authorities said all of the incidents occurred in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and that Alvarado is currently being held without bail pending further legal proceedings.
