What would JJ Watt’s role be when he returns to the Houston Texans?

HOUSTON — JJ Watt last appeared on The Pat McAfee Show As of Wednesday afternoon, rumors about his potential return to the Houston Texans almost put an end to the rumors. Watt said the Texans must be in a “dire situation” for him to reverse his retirement, which he considers a “highly unlikely” situation.

However, if Watt changed his mind and returned because he missed the game, coach DeMeco Ryans wouldn’t be opposed to adding the future Hall of Famer to the roster.

Since losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the 2023 playoffs, Ryans has expressed his desire to improve the defensive line. The results led to significant changes to Houston’s front four, including the free agency signings of Denico Autry and Danielle Hunter.

If he returns to the field, Watt won’t be the first defensive lineman to top opponents’ scouting reports. However, his final season with the Arizona Cardinals showed that the future Hall of Famer can still play a vital role in Houston’s defense – finishing with 39 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 16 games during the 2022 season.

In the latest episode of Locked On Texans, Coty M. Davis and John Hickman discuss the realistic acquisition of Watt and the team’s potential role.

“I love hearing JJ say he’s ready,” Ryans said Monday at the 21st annual Houston Texans Charity Golf Classic.

“I have his number ready in case we need him. I may have to make that call, so I’m glad it’s open to him… I need him now – I have to make that call properly now Whenever JJ Watt is ready to go, I’m ready to go.
