Ricebirds dominate Houston All-Star game | Sports

All four Ricebirds contributed to their respective teams in All-Star games.

The seniors last representing El Campo went 4-5 at the plate while drawing four walks. Poenitzsch also pitched one inning for his team, allowing no hits and no runs. Bystek had an RBI while Drake used his speed to score a run.

Dorotik didn’t have a hit in the game, but he drove in the most runs for El Campo with an RBI in two different at-bats.

The five were the only county players named in squads this season.

Schulz and El Campo head baseball coach Jacob Hooker will be part of Team Texas in the 2024 High Plains Shootout in Oklahoma in July. Hooker will be the head coach of the Texas Navy team while Schulz will be one of seven pitchers for the Red team. Of the seven, four come from 4A and lower schools. Hooker will be one of three coaches leading the blue team.

No other baseball player from the area made the Texas team.

The shootout will feature teams from Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.

The Ricebirds went the furthest in the county baseball playoffs this season, reaching the third round of the playoffs before losing to Boerne in a tough three-game series. Boerne ended up falling in the regional final, one game before the state tournament.
