**All persons accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty.**

The ongoing investigation into 35-year-old Alexa Wingerter, a former Slidell High School teacher, has led to additional charges and the arrest of a second Slidell High School teacher, 31-year-old Shelby Cavignac.

Alexa Wingerter was the subject of a lengthy investigation that began in early March 2024 into allegations that she had engaged in inappropriate relationships with male students at Slidell High School and sent inappropriate photos and messages via cell phone and various social media sites. As a result of the investigation, Wingerter was arrested in late April.

Since the initial arrest, several search warrants have been executed and Slidell Police investigators found sufficient evidence to suggest that a second Slidell High School teacher, Shelby Cavignac, also had inappropriate relationships with students. The new evidence also supports that Wingerter had inappropriate relationships with additional students who were not immediately identified during the initial investigation.

Based on the facts presented, an arrest warrant was issued for Cavignac under LRS 14:81.4 (Prohibited Sexual Conduct Between a Teacher and a Student).

Additionally, three new warrants were issued for Wingerter’s arrest for (2) counts of LRS 14:81.4 (Prohibited Sexual Conduct Between a Teacher and a Student) and LRS 14:81 (Indecent Conduct with a Minor). Wingerter and Cavignac were both arrested on their warrants on Wednesday and booked into the Slidell City Jail.

The investigation is not yet complete.
