Motorcycle accident statistics

Motorcyclists are more vulnerable to fatal accidents and serious injuries because they are not as well protected as drivers of other vehicles. Despite this, they remain widely used because of their easy accessibility and the sense of freedom they can provide their riders.

However, compared to car drivers, they are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to die, according to estimates by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2021, the death rate for motorcyclists per vehicle mile driven was nearly 24 times higher than that of a regular car occupant.

In addition, the accessibility of motorcycles makes many tempted to use them even without the proper skills. The NHTSA estimates that 36% of motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes in 2021 were riding without a valid motorcycle license.

According to the latest data from the Transportation Injury Mapping System, there were 634 motorcycle crashes in San Diego resulting in injuries or deaths in 2023.
