An orange air quality warning means that the concentration of air pollution in the region could become harmful to the health of sensitive groups.

BUCKS COUNTY, PA — The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission issued an Orange Air Quality Alert for the Greater Philadelphia area, including Bucks County, on Friday.

An orange air quality warning means that air pollution levels in the area may be harmful to sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people with asthma, heart disease or other lung conditions, and the elderly.

The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activities or physical activity outdoors.

For example, you can do the following:

  • Take public transportation or a ride share.
  • Take the bus, train, subway, or carpool to work or school.
  • Do all your errands in one trip and avoid unnecessary cold starts.
  • Don’t fill up too much. Spilling fuel adds two tons of air pollution to the mix every day.
  • Use wood stoves and fireplaces carefully and economically. Burn only untreated hardwood in a well-maintained wood stove or fireplace.
  • Make sure your tires have the correct air pressure. Correct tire pressure saves gas and air.
  • Save energy at home. Set the thermostat lower in winter and higher in summer. Saving energy not only improves air quality, but also saves money.
  • Have your car serviced and maintained regularly. A well-functioning vehicle emits fewer pollutants and saves fuel.
  • Turn it off. Idling your vehicle wastes gas and pollutes the air.
