Long Island hit-and-run: Arrest made after hit-and-run that killed volunteer firefighter in East Patchogue

EAST PATCHOGUE, Long Island (WABC) – Police on Long Island have arrested a woman in connection with the hit-and-run crash that left a volunteer firefighter dead.

Maria Guallpa-Bonilla, 36, of Bellport, was charged with the hit-and-run that killed 22-year-old Christopher Hlavaty, a volunteer firefighter from Hagerman.

Guallpa-Bonilla was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. She was held overnight in the Fourth District and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in First District Court in Central Islip.

Hlavaty was a volunteer firefighter with the Hagerman Fire Department for two years and was named Rookie of the Year just last month.

Chris graduated from Sayville High School in 2019. His dream was to be a firefighter and paramedic. He wanted to go to college and planned to join the National Guard next week.

“And now it’s just been taken away from him,” Chris’ mother said. “Taken in a split second and everyone who knew him is devastated.”

Hlavaty’s funeral will be held Saturday at the Hagerman Fire Department headquarters.
