Young woman charged and held without bail in Bedford shooting that killed her mother and father – Boston 25 News

BEDFORD, Massachusetts – A young woman faces charges in connection with a shooting in Bedford Thursday morning that left her mother and father dead, authorities said.

Jessica Cavallaro, 24, of Bedford, was arraigned Thursday afternoon in Concord District Court on charges that include murder, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon causing great bodily injury and illegal possession of a firearm, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. She was held without bail and the judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation.

Officers received a 911 call around 9 a.m. from a resident of 11 Washington Street who reported that a young woman living in the home had just admitted to shooting her parents, Ryan said during a late morning news conference.

The caller then went outside and, according to Ryan, found two people with gunshot wounds in a car parked in an adjacent lawn.

Cavallaro’s 56-year-old mother, Thelma Tatten, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 56-year-old father, Mark Cavallaro, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died, according to Ryan. A handgun was also found at the scene.

Cavallaro was identified as the suspected shooter and arrested by police without incident.

Cavallaro is the “partner” of a resident of the house from which the 911 call was made, but according to Ryan, she lives at a different address on Washington Street.

Cavallaro’s parents lived in another part of Bedford and it wasn’t immediately clear why they were in that neighborhood, Ryan noted.

Bedford Police Chief John Fisher warned residents to avoid the area due to heavy police presence and road closures.

“It’s a really close-knit community, very, very small, so it’s just overwhelming for everybody, I’m pretty sure, obviously devastating, but just really out of character and very, very unexpected,” said a young woman who went to Bedford High School with Jessica Cavallaro.

She couldn’t believe that Jessica was arrested on Thursday for shooting her parents.

“A very, very quiet, very reserved, very, very sweet girl. I think she’s the absolute last person you would expect to do something like this. So it’s devastating for everyone involved,” the former classmate said.

Many neighbors were shocked by the murders. Not so Pete Burke.

“I was just at Dunkin’ Donuts and I saw two police officers come in and then turn around and run away,” said Pete Burke. “I had a feeling they were coming to the scene. Nothing that happens in the world shocks me. But you know, I certainly didn’t expect something like this when I went to work this morning.”

Burke said he knows the neighborhood well from his painting business and from riding his bikes with his children through the tree-lined streets.

Other neighbors said what neighbors often say after a tragic event in their midst: not here.

“This is a very safe area,” one said. “And it was shocking to hear something like this. I just think this is out of the blue, crazy and doesn’t happen here.”

State police detectives assigned to Ryan’s office are assisting Bedford police in the investigation.

“Many of the incidents over the past few weeks and months have involved firearms getting into the hands of people who shouldn’t have had them,” said Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Cavallaro will appear in court again on August 20.
