Former Metropolitan Police officer Adam Provan found guilty of raping a girl and a woman

A former Metropolitan Police officer has been found guilty of raping a woman and a girl.

Adam Provan was found guilty on Monday of six counts of rape of a police colleague between 2003 and 2005.

The 44-year-old from Newmarket Suffolkwas also found guilty of two counts of raping a teenager he met on a blind date in 2010 after lying about his age.

Provan was an active officer in the The police East Area Command Unit at the time of the crimes.

Detective Sergeant Victoria James described Provan’s crimes as “truly horrific”.

“Provan abused his position to gain the trust of these two women,” she said.

“The 2010 attack was bold and calculated, and there were clear signs that it had been planned in advance.

“The second victim was the victim of a campaign of controlling and abusive behavior and sexual violence.”

She added: “I commend the incredible courage of the two women who helped us bring Provan to justice.”

During the trial at Wood Green Crown Court in north London, it was revealed that Provan had met the 16-year-old girl through a friend.

The court heard he had lied about his age, claiming he was 22.

Jurors were told that he later took her to Central Park in Romford and forced her to perform a sexual act.

She told a relative that she had been raped at the time, but the incident was not reported to the police until 2016.

Provan was later sentenced to nine years in prison and released from the Met in March 2019.

However, he successfully appealed against these convictions, which were overturned in 2022.

In May of this year, a retrial began on six new charges of rape in connection with the second victim.

The jury unanimously found him guilty on all eight counts on Monday. The verdict will be announced on August 21.
