Shock in Mumbai: Man rapes underage daughter over several months, impregnates her and is arrested

Mumbai, May 31: A 40-year-old man, who is a street vendor by profession, was arrested on Thursday after raping and impregnating his minor daughter over several months in Mumbai. He was detained by police as he tried to flee.

According to police reports, the man had only been released from prison in November last year. After his release, he began sexually abusing his 17-year-old daughter, who had been living with her paternal grandmother since her mother left the family. The girl remained silent for several months, fearing her father’s threats. Eventually, however, she told a neighbor about her missed menstrual cycle and constant stomach pains. Concerned for her well-being, the neighbor took her to a government hospital, where doctors discovered that she was already seven months pregnant.

The hospital immediately informed the police, following which the girl’s statement was recorded and an offence was registered against her father. The man now faces charges under Section 376(2)(n) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) (punishment for rape) and Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

The accused, a street vendor by profession, tried to escape but was arrested by the police. The family lives in slums and the girl is currently in hospital where her condition remains stable.
