Investigation into former Raptors center could lead to changes in sports betting

The Jontay Porter betting scandal could lead to some pretty significant changes to sports betting in the not too distant future.

According to ESPN’s David Purdum, the NBA and its betting partners are reportedly discussing limiting the number of players made available to sportsbooks in prop betting and have discussed potentially removing “under” from the betting menu.

Porter was suspended by the league last month after an NBA investigation found that the former Toronto Raptors center disclosed confidential medical information to a well-known athlete, limited his own performance to influence the outcome of at least one bet, and had bet on basketball games while a member of the Raptors organization.

The investigation began following a series of unusual sports betting activity in bets that predicted Porter would fail to meet certain statistical milestones. The league found that a sports star with whom Porter was associated placed an $80,000 bet on March 20 that Porter would beat his expected stats. Porter then withdrew from the game.

Porter had a two-way contract with Toronto that would have him make $415,000 this season.

The league is considering limiting the offering of two-way players in prop betting, ESPN reported. This change would mean that players like Porter would not be offered betting by sportsbooks.

The NBA has reportedly shared information from its investigation with federal prospectors, according to ESPN.

Porter played in 26 games for Toronto last season, starting five times for the organization in place of the injured Jakob Poeltl.
