Which undrafted Buffalo Bills rookies have the best chance of making the team?

The Buffalo Bills are wrapping up their first week of OTAs and this was the first chance for the coaching staff to see the majority of the team on the field together. The Bills have seen some pretty significant changes this offseason and there are more position battles than in previous years.

When it’s time for the Bills to trim their roster to 53 mandatory players before the season, there could be more than a few surprises. Some of these could include undrafted free agent signings, which hasn’t been the case in the past.

It’s rare for undrafted free agents to make the 53-man roster in their first season in the league, but it has happened on occasion. In 2020, Reggie Gilliam would make the team as an undrafted free agent.

This year, two players stand out with the best chance of making the 53-man roster as undrafted free agents. First up is Frank Gore Jr., who has had a lot of buzz so far, but mostly because of his name.

Frank Gore Jr. is the son of former Bills running back Frank Gore and was not selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. The former Southern Mississippi running back has something to prove, and based on his comments from rookie minicamp, he’s ready to make his case.

After James Cook, the running back position is pretty wide open and Gore will be competing with fellow rookie Ray Davis as well as Ty Johnson. Although Johnson has played well, he only signed a one-year deal with no guaranteed money and his roster spot is far from locked.

The other player hasn’t spoken much so far and that’s Jack Browning, who was San Diego State’s punter for the last two seasons. The Bills have significant questions at the position after a down year from Sam Martin and the return of Matt Haack.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the deciding factor is who does the best job guarding field goals for Tyler Bass. The Bills don’t kick often and that’s a bigger part of their responsibilities.

One area where Browning stands out from the other two punters on the roster is that he has experience kicking the field. He would have 47 field goal attempts, connecting on 35 of them, and that versatility would be great in case Bass were injured during a game.
