Wisconsin woman killed, driver injured in Merritt Island crash

A 60-year-old Wisconsin woman was killed Monday afternoon after Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the vehicle in which she was a passenger left the roadway and collided with a fire hydrant.

The fatal crash occurred around 12:26 p.m. along State Road 3 – also known as Courtenay Parkway – and the intersection of Pine Island Road. Troopers did not identify the woman or the driver, a 55-year-old man from Portage, Wisconsin, who was seriously injured.

It was the second reported traffic fatality in Brevard in less than 24 hours.

Investigators said the woman, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was the passenger of a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander that was traveling northbound in the outside lane of Courtenay Parkway when the accident occurred. Police officials said the SUV, driven by a 55-year-old man from Portage, Wisconsin, left the roadway for an unknown reason and entered the concrete median before rolling across the southbound lanes and into the fire hydrant, police officers reported.
