FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – One person is dead after a van struck a man on the road outside his home on State Road 114 in Whitley County on Friday.

Indiana State Police said the accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 6500 block of State Road 114, about five miles east of North Manchester.

A preliminary investigation revealed that 83-year-old Carl W. Moehle of Roanoke was standing in the street “appearing to be picking up trash on the roadway” when a white 2009 Chrysler van drove up the hill and struck Moehle.

Police said there was evidence that the driver of the van, Alison Harrison-Campbell, 39, of Huntington, swerved and turned left to avoid Moehle, who was thrown into a side ditch by the impact.

Mr. Moehle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner.

Harrison-Campbell was fully cooperative with investigators. As required by law, she was taken to Parkview Huntington for a blood test. These results are pending as the accident investigation continues.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
