AJK govt suspends mobile services for two days

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government recently decided to suspend mobile and internet services for a period of two days. The move came after failed talks between the Joint People’s Action Committee and the Azad Kashmir government, which prompted protesters to march towards the capital Muzaffarabad.

According to details, the decision to discontinue these services was taken by the Azad Kashmir government itself. Prime Minister Shehbaz has called a meeting on Monday to discuss the situation in AJK, which will be attended by the AJK Prime Minister and other relevant parties. Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Energy and Food Security will also be present in the meeting.

Protests in AJK have been going on for three days, with demonstrators voicing their displeasure over increased electricity tariffs, flour prices and perceived elite privileges. Clashes reportedly broke out between police and protesters, leaving one police officer dead and several people injured. Over 150 protesters were reportedly arrested.

Although the Rangers were deployed on Sunday, they were later withdrawn as the AJK government decided to continue negotiations on the third day of protests. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz have stressed the importance of exercising restraint and resolving the issue through dialogue.
