D.C. shooting leaves one dead, six injured, including children – NBC4 Washington

One man was killed and six people were injured, including two children, in five shootings in the district over the weekend. One was 14 years old and the other was 12.

Both children are expected to survive and are believed to have accidentally shot themselves, authorities said.

The 14-year-old shot himself Saturday in the 1200 block of 47th Street NE, D.C. police said. In the courtyard of the Paradise at Parkside apartment complex on Jay Street NE, where the 12-year-old shot himself on Sunday, resident Olivia Felder said she was moving out.

She said she has never seen violence this bad in the 22 years she has lived there.

“I can not stand it anymore. I can not stand. It’s every day, it’s all day. I can’t stand it,” Felder shouted.

She said she fell to the floor of her apartment more times than she could count as shots rang out in the complex.

“It’s worse than hard. I hear a gunshot and get out of my bed and lie on the concrete floor. It’s any time of day, any time of day, it doesn’t matter,” Felder added.

Police investigated the shooting of the 12-year-old for several hours. While investigators initially believed someone had shot him in the stomach in an apartment, they later determined he had shot himself outside in the common area.

A law enforcement source told News4 that someone took the gun and left the scene.

On Saturday, two men were shot on the other side of the complex on Hayes Street. One didn’t survive. Earlier that day, two other people were shot in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue SE. A man was also injured in the latest shooting on Sunday in the 3200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE.

“Bullets can come in through these windows and the kids or whatever, the teenagers have taken control. I pray every time,” Felder said.

She added that she lived like a hermit because of fear. Now she has found a new place to live in a retirement community and is moving out.

According to police, a suspect in the shooting was “stopped” on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE. In the other cases there were no arrests.
