The victim’s adult son said on Twitter that they were attacked after confronting teenagers who were chanting tragedies.

He said: “We emerged from Carrow Road after the game to chants of Turks with knives and Galatasaray.”

“When I asked the boys why they said my father had been slashed in the neck with a blade and hit by a full can.

“If anyone knows anything, please come forward.”

Leeds often face vitriol over two fans who were stabbed to death in Istanbul in 2000 before the club’s clash with Galatasaray.

Norwich City confirmed that two people have been arrested over the alleged attack and the club is now assisting police with the case.

Ahead of today’s game, Norfolk Police said: “Additional police officers will be on duty in Norwich for the play-off game.”

“Officers worked with football clubs and British Transport Police to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day.”

Matchday police chief Kris Barnard said: “We know this is a crucial game and an important occasion for fans.”

“We will have additional officers deployed in and around the stadium and the city center to welcome fans to the city and keep people safe.”

“Good weather is forecast so please enjoy yourself, enjoy the May sunshine and enjoy the occasion.”

Norfolk Police have been contacted for comment.

The first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final ended in a goalless draw after Leeds had a goal ruled out.
