Two SSISD employees arrested for abusing a student

May 10, 2024 – Press release from the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office

Sulfur Springs Independent School District Police are actively involved in an investigation in conjunction with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. Sulfur Springs ISD administration and police were made aware of an incident involving the unlawful restraint of a student. Over the past two days, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and the Sulfur Springs ISD Police Department have worked tirelessly on this investigation and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our community, our schools and our youth.

As a result of the investigation, two Sulfur Springs Independent School District employees were arrested for unlawful restraint. On May 10, 2024, Marcie Stewart and Kristy Williams were booked into the Hopkins County Jail on charges of false imprisonment, a state prison felony. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests are likely. We would like to thank the educators and staff who came forward to report suspicious and concerning actions that initiated this investigation. Their actions directly impacted our ability to protect youth in our community and schools.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who witnesses suspicious or concerning actions to report them to law enforcement. It takes the entire community to ensure Hopkins County remains a safe place to live, work and raise a family. For professionals, especially those who work with children, we remind you that the state of Texas requires reporting abused or neglected children. Failure to report such information as a professional constitutes a criminal offense.
