Romanian who raped homeless man “because it was easy” jailed

A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a homeless woman in Limerick five years ago.

The Limerick Leader reported The Romanian national Cristian Gogosiou, 37, of Mount Kenneth Place in Limerick, was found guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court earlier this year of one count of rape and one count of oral rape in relation to the woman.

The victim, who was 31 at the time and cannot be named, said Gogosiou was well dressed when he approached her on September 26, 2019 and offered her 6,000 euros and jewelry in exchange for sexual intercourse.

The court heard that the woman was struggling with problems related to alcohol and drug abuse at the time and had told Gogosiou that she needed to relieve herself and had therefore gone into an alley.

Gogosiou pulled out a medium-sized switchblade and told the victim he was going to “cut her insides out” before pushing her against a wall and raping her vaginally.

Courts.ie reported that Gogosiou said in an interview with Gardaí that he raped the homeless woman “because it was easy.”

The sentence imposed today was set by Judge Siobhan Lankford at 10 years’ imprisonment, but the final two years were suspended. The start of pre-trial detention was postponed until 23 May 2022.

The maximum sentence was set at 12 years after it was determined that the attack fell into the more serious category of the offence due to its serious nature. However, the sentence was reduced because Gogosiou – a father of three children, one of whom lives in Romania – is a foreign national and is serving a prison sentence in Ireland.
