A landslide caused by flooding in central China’s Hunan province killed six people on Sunday, state media reported.

The disaster “led to the collapse of a one-story guesthouse,” state broadcaster CCTV reported.

“It was initially confirmed that 18 people were buried,” CCTV reported, adding that six bodies and six injured survivors had been recovered so far.

The landslide was caused by sudden flooding on a mountain, according to CCTV.

And in May, a highway collapsed in southern China after days of rain, killing 48 people.

China is currently the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, which scientists say are driving climate change and leading to more frequent and intense weather extremes.

China has long relied on environmentally harmful energy sources such as coal and has pledged to cut emissions of planet-warming carbon dioxide to a peak by 2030 and to net zero by 2060.

But the country is already the world’s largest producer of renewable energy: research this month shows that Beijing is building almost twice as much solar and wind power capacity as the rest of the world combined.
