Darts star Kim Huybrechts was the victim of a brutal attack by hooligans after Antwerp’s defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Cup final on Thursday.

Huybrechts is reportedly set to undergo surgery on the broken shoulder he sustained on his way home through Brussels after the game.

According to his wife Dana Verhaegen, Huybrechts was attacked on the ground, punched and kicked after his friend was attacked with a motorcycle helmet.

The darts star managed to get help after escaping the hooligans and making his way to the buses for the Antwerp fans.

The 38-year-old was taken to hospital where he received further treatment. It was confirmed that he had suffered a double fracture to his right shoulder.

“As many have already heard, a lot went wrong in the cup final today,” Verhaegen wrote on Facebook.

“In short: Antwerp fans at the end of the game are walking in a crowd along a path through a park towards the buses.” Due to the gloomy atmosphere, the line gets stuck.

“Kim and Kevin want to pass the line through an opening in the fence to get to the buses more quickly and are attacked from behind.” Verdict: While Kim was lying on the ground taking hits, he suffered a double broken collarbone, unfortunately in his right arm .

It is unclear how long Huybrechts will remain on the sidelines. He will take part in the World Cup of Darts from June 27th to 30th together with his Belgian compatriot Dimitri Van den Bergh.

The frightening attack comes after a difficult period for Huybrechts, who was heavily fined and given a formal warning in February for allegedly threatening to “destroy” one of his Belgian team-mates.

Huybrechts is said to have punched de Decker in the face after a game at Barnsley in November last year as they waited for transport to the airport.

“I will destroy you!” he is said to have said.

“I swear this has been bothering me for a long time. You’re first on my list. And your mother too.’

Huybrechts reportedly had to be restrained after attacking his teammate, who then lodged a formal complaint.

The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) fined The Hurricane £1,500 after its disciplinary committee investigated allegations made by Mike de Decker and Dimitri van den Bergh.
