1 arrested during pro-Palestinian protest at US President George Washington’s home – NBC4 Washington

Hundreds of people demonstrated outside the president’s residence at George Washington University late Thursday and early Friday, and one person was arrested.

According to police, someone threw a water bottle at officers and was arrested for assault.

The crowd shouted, “Let him go!” Let him go!” as the protester was taken into custody.

Thursday’s protest on F Street NW near 20th Street NW focused on university President Ellen Granberg. Protesters say she refused to come to the table with them during the nearly two-week encampment at University Yard.

Some set up tents on the street.

More tents were set up at a large protest outside the presidential residence at George Washington University on Thursday evening, a day after police cleared a pro-Palestinian camp that had been in existence for two weeks. News4’s Jackie Bensen reports.

Police pushed protesters back from the police line, chanting “Go back!”

Protester Selina Al-Shihabi said protesters were not deterred.

“You can’t silence us. You can’t suppress us. You cannot use your oppressive tactics to make us forget our goals,” she said.

The demonstrators mobilized around 11:40 p.m. The group began walking up 19th Street toward H Street. They turned west toward University Yard, which was blocked by a 12-foot-tall fence.

When the group reached the university courtyard around midnight, a protest organizer used a megaphone to ask people to go home for safety and the crowd began to disperse.

The protesters want GW to end its financial ties with Israel.

Early Wednesday morning, D.C. police went to campus to comply with a university-requested order for protesters to leave the encampment. According to the university, police arrested 33 people, including six GW students.

Protesters said they want charges against those arrested to be dropped and they want pro-Palestinian speech on campus to be protected.
