Bring home the gold with these Olympic-worthy culinary challenges in the Atlanta area

Chuy’s Big As Yo Face Burrito Challenge. Chuy’s Tex-Mex burritos are the star of this culinary challenge, which asks competitors to finish two giant burritos filled with rice, cheese and a choice of meat and toppings in one sitting. Finish both and you’ll receive a free meal card for a future visit, or, if you’re feeling spicy, eat your third burrito on the spot. If you win, toast your health with one of Chuy’s signature margaritas.

Carnivore Challenge at Big Pie in the Sky. For more than 15 years, customers have been trying to achieve greatness with Big Pie in the Sky’s Carnivore Challenge. Think you’re ready? Call ahead to schedule a 10-pound version of the pizzeria’s 30-inch Carnivore pizza, topped with pepperoni, ground beef, Italian sausage, ham and bacon. To win, the competing duo must finish the pizza in less than an hour without leaving the table or throwing up (violators must clean up their own mess). The challenge costs $60 to attempt, and winners receive $120 in cash and the chance to be immortalized on the restaurant’s website. For those who want to practice before taking on the challenge, Big Pie in the Sky offers a 30-inch version of the Carnivore — without all the extra meat — on its regular menu.

Spicy Ramen Challenge at Hajime and Umaido. Those with a discerning palate will be well advised to head to Hajime or its sister restaurant, Umaido, where the Spicy Ramen Challenge awaits. The culinary challenge features an upgraded version of the restaurant’s tonkotsu ramen. The dish, which customers can normally order with a spiciness level of 1 to 5, is prepared at level 100 with a blend of 10 spices, according to general manager Elias Collado. Challenge participants, who must sign a waiver before taking on the challenge, have seven minutes to finish the ramen without drinking water or relying on a friend to shoulder the load.

John Henry Challenge at Local 7. An order of a $50 John Henry burger is cause for celebration at Tucker’s Local 7. A server announces the burger as it comes out of the kitchen, and it’s paraded through the dining room. The extravagant act features seven burger patties, seven slices of cheese and seven pieces of bacon topped with a fried egg and served with a pound of fries or potatoes. Contestants have one hour to complete the challenge, and the winners get the burger for free. Co-owner Luis Finley said the challenge — named for the folk hero and the restaurant’s proximity to the railroad tracks — has had a success rate of about 40 percent since it began in 2011.

Pho King Challenge at So Ba Vietnamese Restaurant. Head to East Atlanta to see if you deserve the crown of Pho King (or Queen). For $35 (or free for those who successfully complete the challenge), competitors will be served the equivalent of three large bowls of pho, totaling 6 ounces and 1 pound of meat. Those who finish it all in one hour without getting up will receive a gift card and an “I’m a Pho King Champion” T-shirt. But those who don’t rise to the occasion will receive (in addition to the bitter taste of defeat) a T-shirt that says “I’m a Pho King Failure” on the front. If you don’t make it to the finish line, don’t feel too bad: Only one person has won the challenge over the years, and that person was a professional competitive eater.

Grim Reaper Burger Challenge at Lucky Dog Burger and Brew. The cheekily named Grim Reaper Challenge at Lucky Dog in Roswell might just kill you. The challenge includes everything included in the restaurant’s Undertaker burger, but is eight times larger: 4 pounds of meat, mayonnaise, applewood-smoked bacon, lettuce, nine fried eggs and onion straws on a 1-pound bun custom-baked by local bakery Engelman’s Bakery. Competitors who can eat the $60 burger in an hour will receive a $250 gift card, but owner Tom Lescher says even those who don’t have enough “still have leftovers for dinner for the rest of the week.” The fastest recorded successful eating time was recorded by a professional competitive eater, who finished the Grim Reaper in – burp – 8 minutes and 47 seconds.
