Extreme weather in Genesee County causes trees to fall

According to the National Weather Service, just before 4 p.m. Monday, severe thunderstorms over Pavilion upgraded to a tornado warning about 10 miles southeast of Batavia, with winds moving east at about 35 miles per hour.

Residents report seeing branches and other debris flying, and one person even saw a tree ripped from his front yard.

The damage caused by the high winds is still visible, with debris falling on many roads in the area and even downed trees and power lines.

“Today was horrible,” said Dean Davis of Pavilion. “I wasn’t there, I watched a lot of things with my Ring camera and it was pretty scary. My wife and grandkids were there and were worried about a tornado so they hid in the basement to make sure and what an eye opener when I got home from work tonight. It almost makes you shed a tear.”

Flash flood warnings have also been issued in Erie, Wyoming and Genesee counties.

For now, residents say they are grateful that the worst is over.

At least 10,000 people in western New York and the Finger Lakes lost power because of the storms, according to area utility companies.
