Attempted murder at Trump rally leads to increased police presence in Massachusetts as a precaution

BOSTON – Massachusetts State Police announced Sunday that they had arrested a police officer one day after attempted murder of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Investigators say 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was grazed in the ear by a bullet and dragged off the stage by Secret Service agents, but has since been released from the hospital.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed on Sunday that Corey Comparatore – Translationa rally attendee, died in the shooting. Shapiro said Comperatore was trying to shield his family from bullets.

Two other people suffered life-threatening injuries.

Additional police presence in Massachusetts as a precautionary measure

Massachusetts State Police stressed that there were no known links to the Commonwealth, but announced an increased presence “out of an abundance of caution.”

“The Massachusetts State Police are working closely with our federal, state and local partners to monitor the events that unfolded during a political rally for former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania,” state police said. “There is currently no known connection or direct threat to Massachusetts.”

Police said Colonel John Mawn had been briefed by Fusion Center intelligence analysts and would keep Governor Maura Healey updated.

Anyone who notices anything suspicious is urged to report it to the police.

Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, a security analyst for WBZ-TV, said he believes the violence likely to put law enforcement agencies across the country on high alertadding that local authorities would likely increase security.
