Vacaville police officer hit and killed during traffic stop

VACAVILLE – Matthew Bowen, a current Vacaville police officer and former Concord police officer, was struck and killed during a traffic stop in Vacaville Thursday morning, police said.

The fatal collision occurred around 10:25 a.m. at the corner of Leisure Town Road and Orange Drive.

Bowen was attempting to pull over a motorist when he was struck by a passing vehicle, Vacaville police said in a news release. The driver was arrested.

The officer was taken to Kaiser Permanente in Vacaville, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bowen joined the Vacaville Police Department on June 13, 2013. Previously, he served as a police officer in Concord.

“He served with the utmost dedication and honor and his loss is deeply mourned by the department, the city and the community,” the police department said in the press release.

Bowen leaves behind his wife, two sons, his parents and his brother.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal accident.
