Person killed after shooting involving police officer in North Texas

A person who police said stole a car was shot dead on Wednesday after an altercation with police officers.

BEDFORD, Texas – Two law enforcement agencies in North Texas are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead in Bedford.

Bedford police said officers were notified around 2 p.m. Wednesday that cameras had captured the license plate of a stolen car. Officers attempted to approach the person, who then fled with a gun in his hand, police said.

Police said they stopped the person near the intersection of Central Drive and L Don Dodson Drive. According to a Bedford Police press release, the person expressed suicidal thoughts to officers and officers attempted to deescalate the situation for several hours.

Bedford Police say negotiations were unsuccessful, so officers used non-lethal methods to subdue the individual. Police say the individual attempted to flee, and when they perceived a threat, Bedford Police officers and a Hurst Police officer fired at the individual.

According to the press release, the person died on the way to the hospital. None of the officers were injured.

Bedford Police say the Bedford Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident along with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

The Hurst officer has been placed on leave, but Bedford police have not released any information on the status of their officers.

WFAA has reached out to Bedford Police to see if any of their officers are on vacation and for more information about the person who was shot.
