Cooling stations open despite power outages and extreme heat

As Hurricane Beryl knocked out power to millions of Houston residents, the area is under a heat advisory Tuesday. Temperatures hovering around 32 degrees will continue to climb throughout the week. The heat index, or how hot it feels when combined with humidity, is expected to reach 41 degrees.

High temperatures combined with high humidity create a dangerous situation for many Houston residents, including those without air conditioning. The elderly and infants are particularly vulnerable to the heat.

Some general tips for dealing with heat include drinking plenty of water, wearing loose, light-colored clothing, and wearing a hat and sunscreen.

Symptoms of heat illness include dizziness, confusion, nausea, excessive sweating, and even loss of consciousness. In case of a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
