Mamaroneck community mourns after ‘tragic accident’ that killed child and mother

A Hudson Valley community is in mourning after a 6-year-old boy and his mother were struck and killed by a school bus on their way to school in Mamaroneck on Thursday.

“I was crying, my heart was broken. It was just very sad,” a woman who lives near the scene of the accident told News 12.

“I just started shaking,” says Nicholas Zamora. “It totally freaked me out, it just scared me,” says Zamora.

He witnessed the immediate aftermath of what police described as an extremely tragic accident.

“The child’s death was determined at the scene, the woman was taken to the hospital for further treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries,” said Mamaroneck Police Chief Sandra Diruzza.

According to police, a small school bus was traveling on a green light when the driver hit the child and his mother. They were in the crosswalk when it happened and, according to police, there was a pedestrian sign there.

The bus was headed to Mamaroneck Avenue School and there were children on board. Officials said they were not injured.

Police said they would work with the mayor and other traffic consultants to develop a plan to make the streets safer.

There are currently no charges against the school bus driver involved. Police say they are currently reviewing surveillance footage and have a lot of investigation left to make.

Counseling services are available to Mamaroneck Avenue School students on Friday starting at 8:00 a.m.
