BJP suspends party leader who contested against Abhishek Banerjee

Calcutta:

The BJP on Wednesday served notice to Abhijit Das alias Bobby, the party’s candidate from Diamond Harbour against Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Das’s membership of the party was also temporarily suspended.

BJP state unit insiders said the party’s central investigation team encountered protests by a section of local workers on Tuesday when it visited various areas in Diamond Harbour that had been hit by post-poll violence.

The protesters alleged that the party leadership had neglected the plight of party workers who had become homeless since the end of vote counting on June 4.

“We have learnt that the protesters are also close associates of Das. Hence, a notice of reply has been served on him asking him to respond within the next seven days. His membership of the party has also been temporarily terminated until further orders from the top leadership,” said a member of the BJP’s state committee.

The party’s West Bengal state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar also confirmed the development and said that disciplinary action has been initiated against Mr Das. However, there was no response from Das on the matter till the report was submitted.

The central investigation team, comprising Biplab Deb, the party’s Lok Sabha member and former Chief Minister of Tripura, Ravi Shankar Prasad, former Union Minister, Brijlal, former Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh and current member of Rajya Sabha, and Kabita Patidar, the party’s member in the Upper House of Parliament, arrived in Kolkata on Sunday evening.

Over the last two days, they have toured various areas in Cooch Behar, Baruipur and Diamond Harbour and spoken to victims of post-election violence.
