Suspect arrested in Baldwin Park bus shooting – NBC Los Angeles

A suspect was arrested Tuesday in connection with a shooting that occurred during a fight on a Foothill Transit bus in Baldwin Park.

Juan Mario Trejo, 32, of West Covina, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and held on $1 million bail.

California Highway Patrol Lt. Saul Gomez said the suspect was arrested in Los Angeles, near East Los Angeles. He attributed the arrest to “traditional police work and also some technology,” and said surveillance video from the bus helped investigators identify and track down the suspect.

The shooting occurred Monday shortly after 6 p.m. on a bus traveling west on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway east of Puente Avenue, according to the CHP.

CHP officials said the suspect got into a verbal argument with the bus driver and a passenger. The suspect pulled out a firearm, which led to a physical altercation with another passenger during which shots were fired, according to the CHP.

A passenger – reportedly a woman who was not involved in the actual fight – was struck by gunfire. The bus driver pulled over to the Puente Avenue bus stop, where the suspect got off and fled on foot, CHP officials said.

The injured passenger was taken to Los Angeles County General Medical Center, but his injuries were not life-threatening, CHP officials said.

According to the CHP, there were 17 people on board the bus at the time of the shooting.

Doran Barnes, CEO of Foothill Transit, thanked CHP officers for their work in quickly arresting the suspect.

“Our communities face many issues, including mental health issues, homelessness and drug addiction,” Barnes said. “And unfortunately, we see that these issues affect our community widely and impact our transportation system as well. Safety remains our top priority and we will continue to do everything we can to keep the system as absolutely safe as possible.”
