Teenager hit and killed by train in Sorrento Valley – identified as Torrey Pines High student – ​​NBC 7 San Diego

A teenager who died in a collision with a train in Sorrento Valley on Friday has been identified by his family.

NBC 7 spoke to the teen’s uncle, who identified the youth as Alex Segal and said they buried him last weekend.

The fatal incident occurred last Friday when Segal was crossing the railroad tracks on his bicycle and was hit by an oncoming train.

“After the northbound train passed, a 17-year-old boy crossed the tracks on his bicycle without realizing that a southbound train was also passing by,” the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

The other two teenagers were not injured.

Alex attended Torrey Pines High School and was a member of the boys’ junior varsity soccer team, according to the school’s website.

In an email to Torrey Pines families, Principal Rob Coppo said:

“I know we are all deeply saddened by this loss and we extend our condolences to the student’s family and friends. As you can imagine, the family of this tragic accident is going through an extremely difficult time. The family asks that we respect their privacy at this time.”

“Bicycle and e-bike accidents are among the most common injuries Rady Children’s Hospital treats during the summer,” says Matt Derkrikorian, trauma program manager at Rady Children’s Hospital.

“The state of California has the highest death rate in the United States,” said Nancy Sheehan-McCulloch, executive director of California Operation Lifesaver.

According to McCulloch, this applies to everything from trespassing on the tracks to people crossing the road before it is safe.

A monument was erected in honor of the 17-year-old.
