The police trainer accused of rape has been released pending an ongoing investigation

Following a second court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 2, a Philippi Police Training Academy instructor accused of raping a female police trainee was released with a warning until the next hearing.

This has been confirmed TygerBurger by Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), following the release of the first statement confirming the instructor’s arrest and detailing the incident that allegedly occurred on Sunday, March 31.

“It is alleged that on March 31, a police instructor at a police academy in Philippi in the Western Cape called a female police trainee to his office and she went there after she had made several excuses in the past not to go to his office,” it said it in the statement.

The 50-year-old police trainer is accused of locking the intern’s door as she entered his office and raping her.

After the alleged rape, she was allowed to leave but did not immediately report the incident. The 30-year-old only reported the incident a few days later and the case was reported to Ipid for investigation, the directorate added.

Ipid arrested the police instructor on Sunday, April 21, on rape charges.

He first appeared at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 22, after which the case was adjourned for a formal bail application. Western Cape Police were also contacted for comment and spokesman Sgt Wesley Twigg referred the investigation back to Ipid.
