Police sergeant from St. Petersburg forces wrong-way driver off the road

A St. Petersburg police sergeant collided with a wrong-way driver’s car while driving in oncoming traffic on Monday in an attempt to force him off a one-way street, police said.

According to police, at around 11:50 a.m., an officer noticed the driver of a Honda Accord driving the wrong way on First Avenue South at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop but was unsuccessful.

Sergeant Michael Schade from the police traffic unit then drove behind the Honda with his blue lights and siren on, but the driver still did not stop, police said.

When oncoming traffic appeared in three lanes, Schade decided to collide with the Honda, forcing it off the road near 24th Street, according to police.

“Thanks to Sergeant Schade’s quick intervention, no one was injured,” said a police press release.

Police said more information about the driver would be released later on Monday.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
